God and Savior, Trump the Perfect, wants what he wants.
Trump says 8 European countries will be charged a 10% tariff for opposing US control of Greenland
NUUK, Greenland (AP) — President Donald Trump said Saturday that he would charge a 10% import tax starting in February on goods from eight European nations because of their opposition to American control of Greenland.
Trump said in a social media post that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland would face the tariff and that it would climb to 25% on June 1 if a deal is not in place for “the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland” by the United States.https://currently.att.yahoo.com/news/articles/us-c...Given that, by a 1951 treaty, the US can build all the defense installations it wants in Greenland, this has nothing to do with defense. It's clearly about controlling, and looting, the island's resources. So, no invasion of Greenland, at least until June. Probably TACO.
All hail the Pirate King.
Meanwhile, the FAA is warning airliners away from Central America.

First- the deadline for turning over the Epstein files passed in December.
Next…. The dog started wagging with the whizbang operation in Venezuela which kidnapped Maduro, but left the political infrastructure of the country unchanged…..
Followed by escalating threats against Greenland with concomitant counters by NATO.
Threats of fire and fury against Iran- made and retracted
Now there seem to be stirrings that presage some sort of action in Panama.
Vague hints that we don’t need elections….
ICE going full Nazi in Minneapolis….
ALL in the last month, since Pam Bondi blew past the deadline for turning over all of the Epstein files
The dog is now wagging furiously. Why is the dog wagging furiously?
Could be because of something in those crazy Epstein files that he’s trying to keep a lid on.
I ask, because Trump’s actions over the past month have virtually shouted for us to look everywhere BUT the Epstein files.

Whether TACO or not, current actions have already effectively killed NATO. There is no way the European members are sharing with America intelligence about their actions and plans in Greenland. So NATO’s intelligence sharing is dead. Which means the alliance is a zombie.

Greatly weakened by our effective, if not formal withdrawal, NATO will still continue without us.
And its mission will now include countering hostile actions by the United States.
And it has a lot of economic tools in its toolbox.

Trump’s master plan: tax the shit out of Americans until the EU hands over Greenland!
Does the stupid ever stop?

Progressives believe that the government's imposing of higher taxes is a GOOD thing.
Economically, tariffs are commonly understood as a form of tax.
This is much more fair tax increase than raising the income tax or raising FICA taxes.
It's ultimately a tax on consumption, so very similar to VATs which are applauded in Western Europe.
Why are you a right wing nut job who hates higher taxes?

The difference, in this case, is the tariff is not being used to generate revenue. The tariff is being used to try to extort performance by the European countries, specifically, surrendering Greenland. God on Earth Trump runs on money. So, he thinks money is the way to make everyone else run: pay money to them, or extort money from them, to get what he wants. In this case, he is trying to cost them trade with the US, to force the surrender of the island. In general, Europe runs a trade surplus with the US, in goods, so a trade war with Europe would hurt them more than the US. However, some specific US companies, like Boeing and Lockheed, would be hurt a lot more than others, being cut off from a major market, and vendors of many components.

Steve,
You are confusing Trump's motivation or purpose, with the objective outcome.
Trump's purpose in imposing the 10% tariffs might be to coerce Europe re: Greenland.
It may or may not have that effect. Maybe it will backfire and it will generate even more resistance to the notion.
Objectively, however, it will obviously generate more revenue.
It's a tax.

It would probably generate revenue, because companies like Boeing and Lockheed, who use European vendors, cannot move their supply chains fast enough to avoid it. A trade war may well also cost them sales in Europe, so the government's revenue from US corporate and employee taxes will be reduced.
But the objective of the tariff is not revenue, but to extort Europe into surrendering Greenland.

100% Steve!
Also, many Democrats dislike tariffs because they’re basically a lazy, regressive tax that squeezes the poor and working class while the wealthy JC's sip champagne and pretend to care about "revenues."

Spankee does NOT have the authority--per the US Constitution--to increase revenue of the federal govt.

Tariffs are no more lazy and regressive than VATs. They are both forms of consumption taxes.
Consume less, get taxed less. Consume more, get taxed more.
Seems fair to me.

Hitler tried to do it with guns.
Trump's trying to do it with extortion. Both will result in deaths, destruction, strife, misery.
What's wrong with those Greenlanders? Why don't they want to be raped by a man of Trump's character. I mean, he's got a lotta gold plated stuff and let's everybody have lotsa guns. He's so popular and loved and respected. A veritable saint he is. They should be honored that he wants to grab them by the pussy.

“Greatly weakened by our effective, if not formal withdrawal, NATO will still continue without us.”
It’s not so simple. Once there is a clear break with the U.S., other countries like Turkey and Hungary will drop out and NATO will cease to exist. There will be efforts to reconstitute a new alliance, but I suspect they will fail as each country tries to assert its particular interests. Maybe the EU can formalize a military alliance, but that is fraught with potential divisions too.

I can see Hungary going over to Putin, but the rest of them? Putin has done more to pull NATO together than the Clown Posse.

Agreed. Putin reminded many nations why they had joined NATO, and even encouraged two more members to join.
Even if the US quits entirely, NATO will still be there because of aggressive despots like Putin. Even after Putin loses his war (which he almost certainly will...analysts are projecting that Russia's losses are too great, both materiel and personnel, and it's dragging their economy down), it will be fresh in the minds of member nations, and NATO will persevere.
