...Will get us all killed.

"We found that there's a direct inverse correlation between fluoride exposure and low IQ in children. So the more you get, the stupider you are." - RFK Jr.

Also, if true, it would mean the both he and almost all of Trump's cabinet must have received MASSIVE doses of fluoride when they were children.

There is ONE thing I agree with RFK on...artificial colors. Some of them have been linked to potentially serious health problems, but they've been allowed anyway (during both Dem and Rep administrations). He says he's banning them. Good. That is one point in an otherwise disastrous shift in policy regarding vaccinations and other health matters.

And we're only just over three months into this.

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. So two minutes out of 1440 per day, or about 0.14% of the time. Sounds about right for the Trump administration.

Its really hard to do absolutely everything wrong, but they come pretty darn close.

My mom grew up in Kerrville, TX, where there is fluoride naturally in the water. She credits that for her excellent teeth, and she was a very bright woman.

I'm also appreciative with both those items.

But, I question if screwing around with scientists, and university research budgets --- helps autism or not.

bighairymike: Another big thank you for launching an investigation into the explosive growth of autism in our population

There is no "explosive growth of autism in our population." Kennedy is using data from the 1960s when scientists found rates of autism as low as 4.7 in every 10,000 kids and comparing it to 2022 when the CDC showed the rate of autism in kids under 8 was 1 in 31 without mentioning that, in the 1960s, autism was characterized by “profound impairments,” and today that definition is no longer used. The definition of autism has changed several times since the 1960s and now includes kids with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD.

Shorter version: today autism spectrum disorder is defined to include a wide range of conditions that were excluded or unrecognized in the 1960s. And the more you look for those, the more of them you find.

Many children on the spectrum live perfectly normal lives today and grow up to be perfectly normal adults. Those identified as "autistic" in the 1960s, not so much.

The definition of autism has changed several times since the 1960s and now includes kids with Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD.

Let's not forget; this current publicity bid from RFKJr, a study to determine the cause of autism, is nothing more than an attempt to buttress RFKJr's assertion that "vaccines cause autism". The results of this "study" (to be completed by September) are preordained. We know this because of the people he's putting on this study.

Even though several large studies have failed to prove any causal link between vaccines and autism, RFKJr. is getting ready to spend millions of dollars on yet another. Finally, he will be able to point to his "proof", which he will have conjured up from the bowels of the conspiracy-generating hell of America's fringe.

This is the reason American exceptionalism is dead. This aberration of an administration is destroying all that was exceptional about America.

From the recesses of memory, I recall some at the fool demanding to know whether or not I believed America was an exceptional nation. And at the time, I had no way of knowing that these very people trumpeting "American exceptionalism" would be the very people cheering on the destruction of every premier quality that made this country great.

History seems to progress in leaps and starts. Decades or centuries of advance, followed by decades or centuries of stagnation or reverse. Three steps forward. Two steps back. The high culture of ancient Rome, followed by the early Middle Ages, followed by the early stirrings of renewed advance. The Enlightenment... leading to the high pinnacle of the American century..... and now the barbarians are again at the gates.

Who knows? After almost three millennia, perhaps Western culture has exhausted itself, and now the torch of civilization is being passed to others more suited to carrying it. Or perhaps not. I guess we'll all find out.

A big thank you to RFK for promoting the elimination of petroleum based food dyes in our food supply

California has been fighting food dyes for as long as I can remember. It took long enough for the Fed to get onboard.

Meanwhile, the GoodOldPolluters want to restore air pollution in California, denying the state's right to address the health menace we faced in the 50s and 60s. MAKING AIR GRUNGY AGAIN.

Another big thank you for launching an investigation into the explosive growth of autism in our population

You've bought into another MAGA myth.

The 'explosive growth of autism' does not exist. Autism has always existed but not been diagnosed. Now more people are being tested, diagnosed, and placed on broader spectrum.

Another big thank you for launching an investigation into the explosive growth of autism in our population

It's always been there. First we collapsed a bunch of differently named disorders to "under the autistic spectrum," then we continually refined and expanded the diagnostic criteria, then we taught, refined, and retaught how to diagnose at early and later stages. But I would be willing to bet the growth is higher at schools that have the money, and a competent psych person. A good psych person can alert teachers, coaches, and viola, we have an outbreak. Since you can fudge the data easily for RFK's study - expect some findings.

The cellist drools evenly out both sides of his mouth...

Oh ho ho!

Particularly funny because a week ago, my wife and I went to a fundraiser for an Ann Arbor arts group. On feature was a string sextet performing Vivaldi's "Four Seasons"

It's funny because the cellist didn't drool, but the concertmaster playing the violin could have been. In his case though, your joke needs to be rearranged a bit. His head was cocked to the side, so level risers would have him drooling out of one side of his mouth.

For him to be drooling out of both sides of his mouth, it would have required about a 15 degree list.

Humor aside, it was a wonderful afternoon. The performance was in the house of a friend. Acoustics were perfect and we sat on the front row of seats- not more than five feet from the performers. Watching the subtle and important ways in which they communicated among themselves was a joy. And they were fabulous. All were University of Michigan students and I would place their talents among some of the best in the country.

I grew up among migrant string musicians.... my grandmother was first chair in, among others, the New York Phil and NBC Symphony Orchestra created by Rodzinski.
Her 2nd husband, Warwick Evans, founded the London String Quartet. A close friend of theirs was Gregor Piatigorsky (who whose home we'd go to for Thanksgiving when I was a little kid. Some major string firepower, guys like Heifitz and Primrose played in their living room after dinners. I had no clue at the time ... they were just Grandma's friends.

The strife in Germany and Eastern Europe, the draw of the US music industry brought the best of the best to LA, CHI, NY, etc.
