Mad King Donald threatened Canada with 35% tariffs in an unhinged letter that eventually cites fentanyl as a problem when less than 1% of fentanyl seized originates in Canada, challenging Canada to solve a problem that does not exist.

President Donald Trump late Thursday threatened a 35% tariff on goods imported from Canada, a dramatic escalation in an on-again, off-again trade war with America’s northern neighbor and one of its most important trading partners.

And, in a separate NBC News interview, he suggested blanket tariffs on other US trading partners will jump, as well.

The Thursday actions are the latest examples of a whipsaw policy that’s left investors, trading partners, businesses and everyday Americans alike scrambling to make plans even as the economic ground shifts not just from week to week but in some cases from hour to hour.

This comes after his pointless 50% tariffs on imported copper (mining and smelting copper in the United States can cost as much as three times more than doing so abroad) and his 50% tariff threat against Brazil over its “witch hunt” against criminal ally Jair Bolsonaro for his attempted coup.

BTW, we have a trade surplus with Brazil.

Enjoy your $9 cup of coffee.

And just to prove his demands are fully unhinged, Trumps tariff letter to Canada rambles on about fentanyl as a problem,
when less than 1% of fentanyl seized originates in Canada.

It's hard to solve problems that don't actually exist, eh?

Is it Alzheimer's? Or could it be dementia? Or is it just plain old STUPIDITY.

To be fair, this is not necessarily a sign of Trump being out of it. It's more likely just the Administration trying to defend the tariffs against legal attacks.

As has been noted (and held in the court of international trade case), Congress has the power to set tariffs. The President doesn't have inherent tariff-setting authority. He only has the tariff powers that are delegated to him by Congress.

The President wants to raise tariffs because that's the trade policy he wants to implement - but most of his tariff-setting authority is limited to things like emergencies or border control. So even though his tariffs are driven by his economic policy preferences, he doesn't really have the power to decide what tariffs should be imposed for general economic or trade reasons. So these tariffs are on very shaky legal ground.

Which is why the pronouncements have tended to include fentanyl, or border control, or some other factor aside from trade deficits. That way the Administration can point to them in court and claim that he's exercising a delegated authority to impose tariffs.

Is anyone -even the minority party- saying "PROVE IT"? If I were a congress-being, I would be shouting that at every microphone pointed at me. I very much doubt Canada has a problem with fentanyl. And Brazil doesn't even share a border with us, so that's out. (Does MAGA know we don't share a border with Brazil? I probably shouldn't assume...)

Hopefully the Dems take Congress back next year**. If so, they should be able to put a stop to this madness (since the authority really lies with Congress).

**I don't know the mix of senators seeking reelection next year, but the House has 435 people needing to be reelected. The Dems have been given a Golden Ticket as long as they don't blow it with pronouns (and other nonsense).

They bring it up from time to time. But if they're talking about that, it means Trump's winning that moment in the news cycle. The transparent pretexts enrage people who want Trump to act a different way, but aren't all that substantive in the overall scheme of things - few voters are paying attention, and those that do are unlikely to care all that much about whether Trump drops a line in the letter about fentanyl.

It's useful for stoking indignation (and donations!) among your base, who love getting being told that Trump did a dumb thing again. But otherwise not all that significant.

Only if it gets to the courts on that grounds will someone try to demand that the Administration "PROVE IT."
