Oh nuts. I saw they were running the first ep, over and over, last night. But I got sidetracked and didn't see it.

We’re at cabin up north, where blessedly we have no tv.

Will catch it next week at home.

Today, Tim came with a load of firewood and dumped it in the garage. I’ll stack it later. A face cord and a half. Folks who heat their homes with it up here will burn 6 times that amount in a season. But we’re up here on average about a week and a half a month, and only light a fire in the fireplace in the evenings. Five years ago we installed a high efficiency wood burning fireplace insert with blower. It throws off tons of heat, and there’s nothing nicer than lighting a fire and sitting on the couch with a book when the temperature outside hovers around zero.

Our dog loves it too. She even lets us on the couch with her.

Life is good.

Mike, if you’re reading- headed on a short road trip to Grayling tomorrow.

Peace,
Bill Z

Are you deer hunting ?

I just got back from 3 days of hunting, over by Higgins Lake. Seen deer, but
no bucks, so no venison for me (yet).
Best part of it is the morning hunt. Up at 5:30, in ladder stand about 1/2 hour before
dark. Quiet, peaceful, and filled with anticipation as light slowly comes. Ears
much more important than eyes that early in the process. Watched a couple of does
appear in the very dim light, had heard them cautiously coming toward me for about
10 minutes. They freeze and turn into statues every minute or so, studying every
thing in the area. I passed the test, did not spook them, but no buck trailing them.

Oh well, will give it another go next weekend.

I am and your cabin warmed with wood burning stove brought back fond memories of our annual snowmobiling trips to Lake Horrigan, not far from Gaylord.

Are you deer hunting ?

Nope. My last deer hunt was thirty years ago. My thing was duck hunting.

Strangest thing happened. Even now I can’t explain it….. I’d set out from home like I usually did, about 3 a.m. Was living in Tulsa at the time….. drove an hour south to the Deep Fork River, at the point where the Deep Fork bottoms broadened out into an arm of Lake Eufaula.

Put my canoe in the water, loaded the dekes and gear- again, as usual, paddled a mile through flooded timber the an opening I often hunted from…. Slipped over the side in my waders, checked the wind and laid out my spread of decoys….. then retreated to a pile of brush, hid my canoe under camo, then backed int the brush to wait for “shooting time”.

I could hear them in the darkness, their wings ripping air. Soft chuckling as those on the water called to those in the air. Here and there, a splash, announcing the landing of a mallard….. the sky lightened. Shooting time arrived…. and here came a circling flight of six or seven. “Tica tica tica” I called… their circle tightened as they dropped from the sky, circling a last time, floating down, legs extended, and into the wind. Wings cupped, just six feet over the water now, 40 yards away.

I swung my Remmington 870 to my shoulder, swing down and through the mallard to the aim point just below his webbed feet. It was all instinct at this point.

Except…… just before I pulled the trigger, as I had pulled it hundreds of times before…. I realized with a surprising, unbidden certainty…. that I didn’t want to kill it..

And that’s the last hunt I ever went on.

It re-ran back to back all night overnight. Every time I got up to pee it was still on. Then they had their usual children’s programming in the morning, and they reran the first episode one more time at 2:00 this afternoon.

Little late to tell you now, but Episode 2 runs tonight, maybe they have the same routine?

Yup. Ep 2 starts at 8, and reruns all evening. I'll see if it has anything new or different.

You are talking like a guy who doesn't have a DVR. Very Spartan of you. I hear there are people who don't even have a TV, but I think that is just a old wives tale.
