Every quantum leap in technology breeds euphoria with investors (speculators) pouring money into everything that sounds remotely like the "cool stuff".

And, in the early 90s, it was "biotech", when hot IPOs were a couple-three PhDs, with an idea. "Biotech" mutual funds scored 100% gains, in one year, then were dead money. Of that herd of companies, Amgen is the only one that comes to mind, that is still with us.
