There is compelling evidence for many of the steps required in abiogenesis, from the development of membranes chemical gradients across them to the appearance of cellular organelles. Some holes in steps are expectedly present.

All this slow evolution of life reportedly took place in alkaline vents on the sea floor, not once, but twice! Once for bacteria and once for archea.
