Or "grand unified theory". They've been trying to quantize gravity to tie a nice bow on everything. Turns out that may have been a completely wrong approach, per a recent paper. Gravity is "classical", so they assert. You can't quantize it.

It's referring to the attempt to unify quantum mechanics with gravity (general relativity). The two thus far have been unreconcilable, and this new paper is asserting that it can't be done because that's not how the universe is. (simplistically)

It's some pretty high-level physics, but the article I think is approachable by lay-persons. The paper referenced in the article likely isn't.
