The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

DIS hires Anand Karandeep as the first company-wide CTO.

“As CTO, Anand will oversee enterprise technology, infrastructure, data and AI platforms, product, and engineering across the studio’s segment technology teams. A number of Character.AI’s technical team will follow Anand to Disney from Oct. 2.

The appointments come as D’Amaro since taking the reins at Disney has looked to create a more connected user experience, with Disney+ as the digital centerpiece.”

”The appointment is notable given Disney's past friction with Character.AI. According to Variety, approximately a year before the hire, Disney had taken legal aim at Character.AI, issuing a cease-and-desist letter that alleged the startup was using Disney characters without authorization. The startup complied, taking down the characters Disney had flagged, according to CNBC.”

The idea of monetizing DIS characters in new ways through new media and digital experiences makes sense to me. But It’s still very unclear what direction that will take, and what standards will apply to how the characters are used. Disney+ as a brand is great, but what does it stand for? I’m on the sidelines until that’s been decided and communicated throughout the company.
