In the last two months, Trump’s assault on those who have crossed him has started to careen out of control: firing an independent public servant when he did not like her labor report, trying to boot a Federal Reserve governor, Lisa Cook, who backed Fed Chairman Jerome Powell’s caution in lowering interest rates, and canning a respected federal prosecutor, whose probing of Trump nemesis New York AG Letitia James’s supposed mortgage abuse came up with nothing. At a time when you might have expected Trump to be basking in the afterglow of trumpet fanfares at Windsor Castle, his Truth Social post last Saturday exhorted even his docile shill AG Pam Bondi to step up her efforts to go after his personal hit list, including former FBI Director James Comey and Democratic Senator Adam Schiff (a gift, by the way, to their defense). His message (“We can’t delay any longer, it’s killing our reputation and credibility.”) was so reckless in its overt abuse of power that a wiser head subsequently deleted it. ——Tina Brown

Later it was reposted and made to look like the message was meant for a wider audience all along.
