Then the Dem senators aren't doing their jobs.

"Mr Hegseth, you did not answer my question. Spare us the irrelevant tangents, and answer the question asked."

If they aren't doing that, they shouldn't even be on the panel.


Trade-offs.

A Senator only gets so much time. Which means they only get so many questions to ask. Every time they repeat a question, they lose an opportunity to ask another one.

When the nominee evades a question, the Senator has already accomplished part of what they wanted to do when they asked the question. It then becomes a judgment call - what's the additional benefit to pressing them again, vs. asking whatever their "last" question would have been if it didn't get dropped for time.

Most Senators adjudge that there's not a lot of benefit to getting a second evasive answer to most questions. They'll do it once, quickly, but will usually move on.
