...than be deposed under oath.

So when Trump showed up in court in New York this week, people wondered why. To fundraise, sure. To dominate the media, yep. But one of the most important reasons was to delay his deposition under oath in the $500 million lawsuit he brought against Michael Cohen.

Now that push has come to shove (after two delays) and Trump actually was going to have to be deposed, he's dropped his lawsuit.

Donald Trump dropped his lawsuit against his former attorney Michael Cohen four days before he was set to be deposed under oath as part of the case, according to a court filing.

Because the last thing Trump needs right now is another video deposition.

Guess he's going to have to scrap all that "NEVER SURRENDER" merch... he just surrendered.

He may have waited too long to drop the case. He may still have created a major problem for himself. Knowing the NYS fraud trial was starting this week, Trump and his lawyers told judge #2 in this Cohen civil case -- a case that TRUMP initiated, mind you -- that he would be unable to attend Cohen trial #2 this week and it would have to be postponed until next week because he was required to attend trial #1 for the NYS fraud trial.

He wasn't required to attend that trial. He DIDN'T even voluntarily attend trial #1 each day of the week. He left Manhattan. Not to campaign in an upcoming Presidential primary battleground state, but to return to home in Florida.

In other words, he lied. To a judge.

Prior to him dropping this Cohen suit, there was talk that he might face sanctions or perjury charges from judge #2 for lying that he was unavailable this week. I'm not sure dropping your own case after having lied to a judge eliminates your exposure to contempt / perjury even if the overall case is subsequently dismissed.

His attorneys should have seen this coming, and didn't. Lotsa things comin' home to roost with Trump, and alienating good counsel is one of them, fortunately.

yes, and trump also recently dropped the frivolous lawsuit against Judge Engoron, but won an appellate court delay for listing trump biz at risk.

for the most part, trump's (only viable) strategy to delay, divert and obfuscate HAS worked in every significant instance. this also increases his odds for dismissal on any mountain of potential future technicalities. his risk of any jailtime or full bankruptcy seems zero.

trump's legal strategy to throw any legal glop to see what sticks seems to be funded by an unlimited amount of MAGA and dark PAC donations. there has been no serious repercussions for any level of frivolity, influence, and threats (although he certainly keeps his mouth shut in court).
while the legal outcomes are uncertain, the PR benefits are immediate. there is nothing to indicate this cannot go on forever, with the support of 90% of 'conservatives' and ~30% of the country backing it.

It's never zero. :)
