As he still faces state charges, he would face life in prison without parole (MN law)

Yes. At least here, there is back-up plan so to speak

Not lawyer here. If he gets off the charges at the federal level can he still be tried for the exact same crime/s at state level? My understanding is, double jeopardy usually applies only per jurisdiction but there's always the fine print, exceptions, etc
