I'm considering this as a factor that may have predictive value, either positive or negative.
Can anyone find - or find a workaround for - identifying companies who have bought, taken over or otherwise acquired other firms from any of the factors available in the SIPRO or VL databases?
Thanks in advance.

Those are the companies I need, elann. Thanks.

Anyone have any idea about how I can tease these companies out from financials available from VL or SIPRO?

Thanks again.

That’s the kind of question I’ve started asking ChatGPT. It often has some astute answers along with a few off the wall nonsense. An Example:
“How can I identify companies that have made recent acquisitions from their financial fundamentals?”
ChatGPT
“Identifying companies that have made recent acquisitions solely from their financial fundamentals can be challenging, as financial statements typically do not provide direct information about acquisitions. However, there are several indirect ways to identify potential acquisition activity through financial analysis:
1. Increased Debt Levels: Acquiring companies often take on debt to finance acquisitions. Look for significant increases in long-term debt on the balance sheet compared to previous periods. Also, check if there are any new debt issuances or changes in credit ratings, which could indicate borrowing for acquisition purposes.
2. Changes in Cash Flow Patterns: Acquisitions can affect a company's cash flows, particularly if they involve significant cash outflows for purchase consideration. Look for changes in cash flow from financing activities, which may indicate payments related to acquisitions. Also, monitor changes in cash and cash equivalents to see if there's a significant decrease post-acquisition.
3. Increased Intangible Assets: Acquired companies often have substantial intangible assets such as goodwill, trademarks, or patents. Check the balance sheet for increases in intangible assets compared to prior periods, as this may indicate recent acquisitions.
4. Changes in Revenue and Expenses: Acquisitions can impact a company's revenue and expenses. Look for sudden increases in revenue or changes in expense patterns that cannot be explained by organic growth. For example, a sudden jump in revenue from a new product line could indicate the acquisition of another company.
5. Footnotes and Management Discussion: Companies are required to disclose significant events and transactions in footnotes to financial statements and in management discussion sections of annual reports. Look for mentions of acquisitions, mergers, or significant investments in these disclosures.
6. SEC Filings: Companies are required to file forms such as Form 8-K to report material events to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), including acquisitions. Monitor these filings for any recent announcements related to acquisitions.
7. Analyst Reports and News: Analyst reports, news articles, and press releases can provide valuable insights into recent acquisitions made by companies. Monitor financial news sources and analyst reports for information on acquisition activity.
8. Historical Patterns: Analyze the company's historical financial data to identify patterns of acquisition activity. Look for periods of increased investment or changes in capital structure that coincide with previous acquisition announcements.
By combining these methods and carefully analyzing financial statements, disclosures, and external sources, you can identify companies that have likely made recent acquisitions. However, it's essential to remember that these indicators are not definitive proof of acquisition activity and may require further investigation to confirm.”

A recent spike in shares outstanding and/or TTM revenues would not be definitive, but certainly strongly indicative.
But there would be quite a lag between the transaction and when you get a copy of statements that show it.

I guess it depends how automated you want the process.
