Just saw my first Waymo car on the streets of London. It seemed to be a test drive, not a fare.

They are common in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area. Hard to miss with all of the sensors, etc. on it.
Biggest problem is when idiot drivers on the road do things to it to see how it reacts.

I saw one on the Houston turnpike last week. I don't live in Houston, so I don't know how common they are.
I was surprised by how unnerved I felt watching a driverless car doing highway speeds.

It is different but much safe IMO. Look at what many drivers do and how many accidents there are that are easily preventable. Driverless cars won't drink and drive, fall asleep, use drugs, mess around on the cell phone, get distracted, road rage, etc.

They also don't smell bad, share horrendous politics, smoke, listen to bad music or need a tip...

Not recently but I've had a few political taxi cab rides in my life. Back in the 1998(?), I had a long taxi ride back from a work trip and the driver was Paskitani and was all excited because Pakistan became a nuclear power. I just nodded and just wanted to get home.
Then in Belgium I got a ride from the hotel to the airport and the driver was Iranian. He was complaining to me about how his family had ties to the Shah and had to escape Iran but the Belgians didn't treat him well, etc. etc. Just what you don't need when you just want to relax and get to the airport in one piece.

And hilariously behind the alternative reality of Mr Musk's confident business projections. If you see his lips moving...

The bull case is that the existing Tesla fleet is a simple software update away from all potentially becoming robotaxis. But as far as I can tell, no past or present production Tesla has hardware that is fully L4 capable. The cybercab might be, but it isn't in production yet. And of course there are non-trivial regulatory hurdles as well. I don't see how "widespread" is happening. I think operational Tesla robotaxis existing at all by the end of 2026 might be optimistic.

The new capital will help the company move “with unprecedented velocity, while maintaining our industry-leading safety standards,” Waymo said. “Our focus is now on global scale, bringing the safety and magic of the Waymo Driver to even more cities this year across the United States and international.”tecmo
