Regardless of all the crud swirling about, there is one simple truth. Trump failed.
The most likely reason he failed is he did not take into account, nor probably understand, Ukraine's needs.
Colossal misstep on Trumps part. Perhaps it was a failure on Trumps part to adequately communicate to Ukraine how the deal assured their security.
Regardless, the outcome is a clear failure on Trumps part. Of course he will blame others, but that doesn't change the outcome.

You know what the Ukraine needs to do, more than anything?
Survive.
Maybe ponder that.

I haven't seen any support for the assumption there was any guarantee of Ukraine's security. Did I miss something?

There wasn't anything meaningful, which was part of the problem. Trump said "security was the easy part", accounting for "2%" of the deal. I kid you not. Trump apparently thinks security is nothing more than a cease fire, which Zelenskyy was quick to educate him on. Yet another reason the entire thing blew up. Trump doesn't appreciate anyone trying to educate him.

I disagree. Trump succeeded in paying Putin back for helping him get elected. That was his only goal from the beginning. The pretexts are just red meat for his cult.

There was a very long thread (with little agreement) about how much of a security guarantee the raw materials (rare earths) deal was. It appears the US assumed it was significant while Ukraine discounted it.
Trump has forced an administration with all "like minded" people. This will likely result in them continuing to make miscalculations like this where they make really bad assumptions about what others would think or do.

Trump has never been a negotiator. He is a bully who must dictate terms with enough leverage to get his way. He routinely abrogates settled agreements or contracts to "renegotiate", (read stong-arm), committed partners when he sees them in a weakened position of trust.
He's a real piece of work.

More to the point: a flaming asshole.

Isn't that exactly why he sees Putin as a kindred spirit?
