No one in Warren's family, but his friend Jimmy Buffett died at 76. Apparently they actually did a DNA test to see if they were related.

Jimmy didn't share the longevity genes, but the business sense was there. He parlayed one #1 song, "Margaritaville", and a vast collection of other feel good music into an empire of a billion dollars, placing him #18 on the Forbes all time list of richest celebrities.

I was not quite a parrothead, but whenever I'm at the beach, I look for a good Jimmy Buffet bar to sit and enjoy his songs. He will be missed.

As an elder wannabe Parrot Head, I heard the sad news this AM of Jimmy Buffett's passing & recalled stories & comments Warren had made wondering if they might just be long lost cousins.

"Margaritaville" is one of those classic songs everyone knows the words to and you cannot...not... sing along with!

Always got a big smile from this photo on the back cover of Andy Kilpatricks Monster Milliniun Edition "of Permanent Value" the story of Warren Buffett

I love how WEB called him 'Cousin Jimmy' & Jimmy called Warren 'Unvle Warren' (like a lot of us do!). I rewatched the 2007 intro to the Annual Meeting with Jimmy Buffett & 'Berkshire Hathaway-Ville'! At the meeting last year, Forest River even had a sweet Jimmy Buffett & Margaritaville-themed party boat at the CHI center. Cool that they were buddies and that Jimmy was a long term shareholder, 30+ years I believe. Fortunate to have seen a few shows over 3 decades & a good time was had by all!

More Jimmy Buffett trivia.

Our two grand daughters loved Jimmy Buffett's music while young. I kept one of his CD's on the car stereo, and they always insisted on me playing "Cheeseburger in Paradise" so they could sing along after I picked them up from school to go for ice cream..

I also found a tiny connection with him. He attended the small Pearl River Community college in 1965-66 that I attended in 1951-53. Writeup says he followed a girl friend to the small junior college. But he didn't forget it. He recorded a narration of a halftime show at a football game that featured his music, and waived all fees for using his music. https://prcc.edu/bands-halftime-show-features-jimm.... I played in that band back in the day.

Someone must check my memory about the BRK annual meeting where Jimmy was featured. When waiting for the meeting to start, the announcer says - in the Johnny Carson intro style - "Here's Buffett". And Jimmy walked out on the stage. The crowd erupted in laughter and then Warren joined him. That's what I recall at least.

I always thought they were distant cousins = because of their appearances - until genetic testing proved otherwise.

What I remember is the Movie ending and then an announcer in kind of a game show announcer
voice saying "Ladies and Gentlemen Please Welcome Mr. Buffett." And then someone comes out from
behind the curtain barefoot, wearing blue cutoff shorts and Hawaiian shirt holding a guitar.

At first the crowd was stunned and after they recognized who it was loud applause.
Jimmy Buffett began singing "Wasting Away in Berkshire Hath-A-Way-A-Ville" to the
tune of Wasting Away in Margaritaville.

The lyrics were changed to Berkshire references which I unfortunately
cannot remember (16 years ago)except for the Wasting Away in Berkshire Hathaway A Ville part.

When Warren and Charlie took the stage Warren told the crowd how they did their
best to sneak Jimmy into the Hilton the previous night so the surprise was not
ruined.

I spent a fair bit of today piecing together why Jimmy Buffet passing upset me so.

in 1976 I went from Maine to Flagstaff, Arizona to to pursue a graduate degree in geology. Work for $2600 dollars a year plus tuition, teach 70 undergrads, and if you survive, you leave thinking like a geologist. One of the first guys I met came from Florida to do the same. He and his wife took me out to poke around a mining town the first weekend.

He put on some music "that some of us from Florida know". I asked "is he singing "why don't we get drunk and screw"?". Yep.

We survived. We headed off to far flung places, the middle east, the far east, the arctic, the tropics. Years later, we ended up living a few houses from each other. We ski, fly fish, drink margaritas together, listen to old music and swap lies and stories about our lives. Uncle Warren helped bring about that happy destination. Cheers to the Buffetts.

Thanks for the Jimmy Buffett link. Our son was in the group that evening with the Booth School of Business (University of Chicago) attendees.
Good times!!

A little known fact about Jimmy Buffett that he shared with Hemingway & Steinbeck,

'Sure, we all love Jimmy's music, but have you read his books? Throughout his career, Jimmy Buffett has written three number-one best sellers: the short-stories collection, Tales From Margaritaville, the novel, Where is Joe Merchant?, and his biography, A Pirate Looks at Fifty. Having topped both the fiction and non-fiction bestseller lists has put Jimmy in rare company. In fact, only seven other authors have achieved this level of success, including Ernest Hemingway, John Steinbeck, and Dr. Seuss!'

Indeed, vintage performance! Genuinely deserved the Oscar but we know how the Academy is!
