“I don’t want to hear about the affordability.”

Everyone knows affordability is for the little people.

Define "affordability."
It's a b.s. focus group/polling word.

Buy what?
Which people?
Who decides how much is fair?
Again, it's meaningless.
The government simply does not have the power to make things "affordable." Artificially depressing prices results in scarcity and rationing. This is exactly the problem in NYC with respect to rent control.
IN any case Mamdani promised free buses (not the same thing as "affordable" of course), let's see what he does about keeping that promise.

You're correct about that especially if tariffs are deemed a.firm if tax.
The one way that government surely has the way to increase affordability is to lower taxes.
ProGlibs aren't about lowering taxes. They want to raise taxes.
The difference is that ProGlibs want to raise taxes on income and wealth, which directly disincentives productivity.
A tariff is akin to a use tax or VAT which is like a consumption tax.
