Pressed on religious bigotry, Speaker Johnson makes an ugly problem even worse

GOP Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee added to the pattern this week, publishing a message to social media that argued, “Muslims don’t belong in American society.”

The good news is, the Louisiana Republican finally said something on Tuesday afternoon. The bad news is, Congress’ most powerful GOP leader made an ugly problem even worse.

Johnson effectively presented a defense of his far-right members’ bigotry.

“There’s a lot of energy in the country and a lot of popular sentiment that the demand to impose sharia law in America is a serious problem. That’s what animates this,” the House speaker said. “The language that people use — it’s different language than I would use, but I think that’s a serious issue. Sharia law and the imposition of sharia law is contrary to the U.S. Constitution.”

There is literally no person in an elected position of power in this country who is trying to impose any form of Sharia Law. None. However there are ore than a few Republican lawmakers who are trying to impose their version of Christian Law in this country in an attempt to control others. Speaker Johnson knows that there is no one doing anything with Sharia Law. He also knows that such talk is just a dog whistle to appeal to the ignorant, bigoted people that make up a large part of the Republican base (like BHM and LOLMom).

“They’re trying to impose Sharia Law” is the 2000’s version of “There are communists under your bed” of the 1950’s. It’s rank falsity, designed to appeal to the most ignorant and feaful, who are unable to discern with their own eyes the ridiculous nature of it.

And as we see right here on this board - not to mention in the halls of Congress - it works.
