Awesome governor and presidential candidate Ron DeSantis has unveiled his plan to secure the border, a rehash of former president Trump's failed ideas on steroids. But as Greg Sargent writes in the Washington Post, DeSantis's plan is nothing mote than harsher performative cruelty.

The reason Trump largely failed in controlling the border had little do with competence or 'toughness,' writes Sargent, but the simple fact that presidents lack the authority to close down legal immigration in any substantial way. Even harsh and cruel measures don't dissuade migrants from coming here seeking asylum.

First, DeSantis calls for mass deportations regardless of how deeply connected individuals are to communities here, a plan that the Supreme Court weighed in on just last week and one which the Congress will not fund.

DeSantis also promises to disregard legal limits on how long child migrants can be held in detention to facilitate detaining migrant families longer. Guess what? Trump tried that, too, but it was struck down in court as outside presidential authority. DeSantis would apparently mandate extended detention of all migrant families awaiting legal proceedings, but this would likely require Congress to fund a large expansion of our detention machinery. Good luck with that.

DeSantis would also end guaranteed citizenship for anyone born on U.S. soil. Trump proposed that as well, despite the pesky 14th Amendment.

And DeSantis would force asylum seekers to wait in Mexico for their hearings -- despite Mexico flatly stating this year that it opposes restarting this policy -- drive dramatic escalations in detention, major restrictions on asylum seeking, and would curtail legal immigration as well.

In short, DeSantis wants to take every cruel idea that Trump tried and failed to implement -- either for lack of funding, lack of authority, or because of rebuffs from the courts -- and dial them up to 11, super-charged in an automaton-like way Sargant calls Robo-MAGA.

DeSantis could still win the Rep nomination by promising all of that because most voters (Rep and Dem alike) don't know that the POTUS doesn't have that authority, nor do they know anything about the 14th Amendment.

That's why an educated populace in a democracy is a good thing. You're better able to determine when a politician is talking out of his/her butt.

the national poll split-vote math shows ron will get crushed by don, and i dont think he will even win his own state after trump collects early results. so he, tim, and nikki can commiserate when they send don an updated job request.

MAGA doesnt distinguish on distinction of promises; they are about the tough-guy cult and no way for ron to gain there.

i must admit ron has pulled a funny one with his strategy :

- waste florida tax revenue on campaign publicity stunts, such as flying out immigrants and litigating with disney
(ron's lawyer buddies needs some diversification from personal injury...if you visit\live there, you know what i mean)

- when disaster hits from fake climate change, beg for money from the fed (i.e., other people's tax money), saving florida's for further stunts

- ban the IRS, so ron's replacement cant do the same

even trump has to be a bit jealous of this strategy, having to draw donations away from his personal accumulation.

the national poll split-vote math shows ron will get crushed by don,

National polls mean exactly...zero. Now, in the primaries, and in the general - zero.
State-level polls are all that matter.

wow.

assuming you actually believe state polls matter, its a beatdown by trump for most every state before and after florida's date in the primary.
roughly half these results come in before florida's primary. fox&musk will experience desantis amnesia, if not during then well before.
florida is currently around 50+-10% each, but i expect a significant influence from prior results.
either way, it doesnt matter for the end result.

i dont mind seeing trump lose a few states so he can alienate a few more voters regarding their stupidity and\or corrupt rigged system.

Correct. Just shutting down the illegal immigration would go a long way to defusing the issue to the point rational discussion could be held on the other dimensions of immigration policy.
