What really happened?
1. Well, it wasn't an insurrection. A proper insurrection would likely involve firearms. A lot of firearms. The only one that's been cited was fired by the BLM member Capitol Cop who shot and killed USAF veteran Mrs. Babbitt.
2. And it wasn't an attempt to "overturn an election". The election was NOT done yet, and therefore couldn't be "overturned". The protest was challenging the certification of electoral votes. (Why is there a certification process anyway??? Why??? And why weren't the legal challenges to the certification on the floor of the Congress pursued???)
Footnote: After Pelosi** road blocked Trump's suggestion of National Guard to maintain order for the day, has anyone looked into Pelosi's meeting where she said "we want to keep troops away and see if these mobs can be incited to do something crazy"? "It will be a sight to behold".
(**Why in the world did she have authority to block the troops in the first place???)

I haven't looked lately but in January 2021 least 13 people were hit with illegal gun possession charges stemming from the insurrection. Dozens more wielded knives, stun guns, pepper spray, baseball bats, and flagpoles wielded as clubs and other real and makeshift weapons. A couple of pipe bombs too.
And here's the dictionary meaning of INSURRECTION: an act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an established government.

Jan 6ers thought they were headed to a luncheon by the capitol and we're mislead by agents of the deep state, shot at with rubber bullets and gassed, Jan 6ers were herded into the capital. They brought zip ties to take food home. Their presence was initially welcomed by congress critters, but then deep state rushed Congress out, making it look like Jan 6ers were trying to interrupt the peaceful transition of power as Jan 6ers milled about looking for the luncheon. FBI agents beat the hell out of a few cops, sprayed bear spray on cops, and generally upset the peacefully milling Jan 6ers.
Then Trump found out where they were and peacefully requested they go home. Because the steps appeared unstable, some of the Jan 6ers picked up objects to weigh themselves down as they descended. "What a lovely day," said Pooh the Shaman as he and Piglet Oathkeeper sauntered back to the 3%er acre woods. "Where did we stash all those guns?" asked Roo.
