Post on the Fool METaR board:

Mexico’s Congress authorized up to 50 percent tariffs on Chinese imports on Wednesday, a move seen as an effort to align Mexico with the United States amid pressure from Washington.

*On Wednesday morning, Mexico’s lower chamber of Congress approved the tariffs, which apply to China and other countries with which it does not have a trade deal. *

The article linked to in that post says President Sheinbaum is trying to cozy up to the US.

But those tariffs do not only apply to China.

With the USMCA up for review next July, Mexico may be repositioning itself for reduced exports to the US, by strangling imports of similar goods from China and India, so that more domestic demand shifts to locally produced goods.
