I read an old post recently (http://www.datahelper.com/mi/search.phtml?nofool=y...) and Jim mentioned a filter of

* highest 15 by cash to market cap ratio

Within 'Value Line', is this computed by: ('Cash and Market Securities' - 'Long Term Debt') / 'Market Cap'?

I'm curious how this has performed recently. Last post I saw on it was from Nov-21

Thanks,

Pretty badly lately. Do you want details?

As always, it's a matter of trying to decide whether it's the cycle or the trend.
Zero-dividend medical stocks have NOT been the flavour of the day for a while.

Very quick check, don't hold me to this,
Jan 2020 through Aug 2023
S&P about 11%/year
No-div 15 stock version about 2%/year
With-div 15 stock version about 8.5%/year

Most of the bad returns May-Aug 2023. Maybe just random variation, maybe not.

Jim,

Thanks for the reply. Is this the correct 'Value Line' computation for highest 15 by cash to market cap ratio

('Cash and Market Securities' - 'Long Term Debt') / 'Market Cap'?

Regards,

Pete

I believe this specific screen is simply
'Cash and Market Securities' / 'Market Cap'

The reasoning:
The medical devices category includes some firms still developing their products.
The ones with large current piles of cash tend not to blow up in the short term--if you merely eliminate a few blowups from any portfolio, things tend to get better.
