PS
FYI, never take anything these things say at face value.
My personal experience was that rollout of AI overviews was very different in different countries. Hence my question:
One possible sign that the computing cost is onerously costly and/or so demanding as to be capacity constrained is that the rollout of AI overviews has been very slow...both by geography with gradually staged rollouts by country...
The response from Claude included:
AI Overviews went to more than a hundred new countries and territories in a single week in October 2024, reaching over a billion monthly users.
So, maybe my memory was wrong?
So I asked Gemini (which you'd think would know...),
No, Google AI Overviews were not introduced at the same time in Canada and Europe.
...
Canada ... October 2024
Most of Europe ... March 2025
France ... July 2026
So I wasn't imagining things.
Gemini's AI overview of Gemini's AI overviews says it was a regulatory/legal delay in Europe, and a particularly strong one in France. So my speculation about capacity was off base, but not the observation.
