Israel launches ground invasion of Lebanon

Main battle tanks were seen traversing the border hills, part of an effort to create what Israel called a buffer zone to prevent ground raids towards Israeli communities.

Troops are expected to raid suspected weapons caches, rocket-launch sites and command and control centres, three months after the internationally agreed deadline by which the Lebanese armed forces were supposed to have disarmed Hezbollah.

Later on Tuesday, the IDF issued an evacuation order for the coastal city of Sidon, where it said the terror group was attempting to rebuild its infrastructure.

Despite being bombarded almost daily for months, Hezbollah has not fired rockets at Israel since the US-brokered ceasefire in November 2024. This period included the 12-day war against Iran last June.

But, in a statement following its attack on Sunday, Hezbollah framed its action as “revenge for the pure blood of the Islamic leader, the Honourable Grand Ayatollah”.
----

Indicating a plan for a relatively limited incursion, rather than a deep conquest of Lebanese territory, Israel Katz, the defence minister, said on Tuesday that troops had been authorised to “advance and take control of additional positions”.

The IDF already had five high-ground outposts just inside Lebanon, from which they refused to move following the end of their invasion in October 2024, when they significantly weakened the Shia Iranian proxy group.

Interesting that the 2024 cease fire was only observed by Hezbollah, and completely ignored by Israel. From the border, Sidon is about half way to Beirut. It will be interesting to see if the article's optimism that this is only a "limited incursion", rather than a "conquest", is borne out.

update:

IDF expands southern Lebanon position, but no big invasion until Iran situation is calmer

The IDF on Tuesday announced that it has slightly expanded its security zone in southern Lebanon, adding to the five positions that it has held there since the November 2024 ceasefire.

However, the IDF Northern Command said that it was unlikely to initiate a larger ground invasion into Lebanon until the situation with Iran was calmer, if at all.
