From my post "Retirement Year 8" early this year*: "
Add further an enormous one-time discretionary purchase - a private jet card - when in peak pandemic, our eldest told us we needed to meet his live-in girlfriend soon as he was planning to propose later that year. Two thousand miles away. It was great -- she is indeed now our DIL, and their new house is twenty miles from here -- but those stars will never align again."
Email me for details, but my personal summary of that two-year Net Jets card is:
- one of the very best things I have ever done for my lifestyle. It was wonderful.
- as it is progressively clearer that the planet is on fire, routine discretionary jet travel imo has become unconscionable.
- like an old sailor who's retired to a house overlooking a port so he can watch the ships arrive and depart, I still look up a bit wistfully at a Citation or Gulfstream flying overhead (per the Flightradar app)
- it's not impossible that in coming years I will indulge once or twice more on one-off charters...but probably not.
