Democrats have been displaying way more bench talent, power and unity at the DNC than anything I've seen on the other side. Easy to see why this party now has majority support among women, young people under 35, Hispanics and African Americans. This is why Harris now has multiple paths to winning the 270 electoral votes needed to be elected President.
For starters, every former Democratic President and First Lady since the 1990s showed up and gave rousing speeches endorsing Harris. In fact, Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton both earned just as much thunderous applause as their husbands. No former Republican President showed up for Trump.
Some of the highlights and my favorite lines from each speech:
Michelle Obama
"Who’s going to tell him [Trump] that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those 'Black jobs'?" the former first Lady asked.
“We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth,” she said. “If we bankrupt a business, or choke in a crisis, we don’t get a second, third, or fourth chance.”
“If we see a mountain in front of us, we don’t expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top,” she said. Line by line, she received thunderous applause.
“Going small is never the answer,” she said. “Small is petty, it’s unhealthy and, quite frankly, it’s unpresidential.”
Fmr President Barack Obama
“I'm the only person stupid enough to speak after Michelle Obama.”
"I’m feeling hopeful because this convention has always been pretty good to kids with funny names who believe in a country where anything is possible."
“I noticed by the way, since it became popular, they don’t call it Obamacare no more,” the former president said, scratching behind his ear for effect.
Hillary Clinton
On women's right to vote and the suffrage movement:
"Tennessee became the final state to ratify the 19th Amendment to the Constitution," said Clinton. "The state legislature was deadlocked until one lawmaker’s mother, a widow who read three newspapers a day, sent a letter—a letter to her son. 'No more delays,' she wrote. 'Give us the vote.'”
"I want my grandchildren and their grandchildren to know I was here at this moment, that we were here and that we were with Kamala Harris every step of the way."
"I wish my mother and Kamala's mother could see us, they would say "Keep going." Shirley and Geraldine would say, "Keep going.”
"Donald Trump fell asleep at his own trial and when he woke up, he made his own kind of history: the first person to run for president with 34 felony convictions."
The Music
Jason Isbell, talented singer from Alabama, bringing some soul-stirring country music. Love the way the Democrats are demonstrating true patriotism and love for country.
Lil John, rapping and bringing down the house for the Georgia delegation. Best state roll call ever.
Stevie Wonder getting a standing ovation after performing "Higher Ground"
John Legend and Sheila E. just did "Let's Go Crazy"
Fmr. President Bill Clinton
“I have no idea how many more of these I’ll be able to come to… here’s what I want you to know: if you vote for this team — if you get them elected — you’ll be proud of it for the rest of your life. Your children will be proud of it.”
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
What a speech!
“I, for one, am tired of hearing about how a two bit union buster thinks of himself as more of a patriot than the woman who fights every single day to lift working people out from under the boots of greed trampling on our way of life.”
Sean Fain, Leader of the UAW
"It's getting hot in here..." Takes off his jacket and reveals a T-Shirt saying "Trump is a scab. Vote Harris"
Geoff Duncan, Fmr Republican Lieutenant Governor of Georgia
"If Republicans are being intellectually honest with ourselves, our party is not civil or conservative. It's chaotic and crazy. Our party acts more like a cult worshiping a felonious thug."
“If you vote for Kamala Harris you’re not a Democrat, you’re a patriot.” Crowd gives him a rousing standing ovation.
"Doing the right thing will never be the wrong thing. Stay strong."
In July, he had said "This November, I am voting for a decent person I disagree with on policy over a convicted felon without a moral compass"
