Try visiting boards you don't normally visit, starting with the 'All Boards' link above. Or request a new board by posting to 'Any Missing Board Requested Here'.

When I click on a favorite board with the yellow tick mark, to see the unread posts, the next screen shows 20 posts, only the last few of which are unread, and I have to find where I left off last time. (The link of read posts changing color does not work reliably between devices.)
Sometimes it shows 20 read posts, and I can only see the unread post(s) when I hit next.
If I remember correctly, the old boards only showed one read posts and the unread posts below. I think that was useful and consistent, and eliminated noise.

That is definitely interesting. I could certainly make it behave that way. It does make sense, but it is also nice the way it works now, although for different reasons.
Presently navigation (regarding which post numbers you are viewing) also carries a rather clear logic. The top post in the list remains unchanged same if you visit a second board, and then return back to the first board.
1. For example, let us say that you are on the Berkshire Board and the post shown at the top is number 21.
2. Next visit Shrewdsmith and move around through the pages a few times.
3. Now return to the Berkshire Board. It doesn't matter if you return via Favourites or searching for the board another way, but it will remember exactly where you last were and keep you there. You will see post number 21 at the top. If there are new posts, they could be on the next page.
4. (Similar if you return to Shrewdsmith, you will be exactly where you left it).
I think the clarity of not moving you around automatically is fairly nice also. Changing the top post in the list is only conducted by yourself (pressing Next Page, Prev Page, Next Week or Prev Week). But I could change it, as you write, to auto-adjust the navigation to (the last post minus 1). That could be slightly annoying also if want to read back on posts, and not have your position auto-update, if leaving the boar and returning, to jump to the very last posts and miss where you were re-reading posts. I don't think both ways are good, and just different.

The previous system remembered the last post that you clicked on, which was then the first post shown before the unread posts. From there one could always hit the 'previous' link, or change a post to threaded to read back in the discussion.
I believe many people left the boards in unthreaded, and skipped through the posts one by one, or opened only the ones they found interesting or that had enough recs.
Can't speak for others, but I usually clicked on the last post on purpose to mark everything as read (or clicked on 'mark all read' on the Favourites page), to start the next session with a clean slate.

This is also how I used the old boards and I would welcome a return to this behavior: when you click on a board from Favourites and have been reading in unthreaded, it takes you to the list of posts, last unread post at the top of the list.
Another bit of navigation that I used and enjoyed on the old boards was if you were reading a board in unthreaded mode and from a post you clicked on the board name up top, it took you to the list of posts on the board with that post you were last reading at the top of the list. You could then sort the list by author name and you'd have a history of that poster's contributions to the board going forward and back in time from that post, which was again placed at the top of the list after the sort. I found that behavior very useful in locating old posts of mine or another poster.
