That history is interesting. I personally prefer: the no apostrophe approach in branding, as you can’t put them in urls and it looks cleaner from a branding standpoint.

Not sure I would want to be explaining to my 10 year old self, why both sentences below have correct punctuation:

McDonald’s financial statements…

Greggs’ financial statements…

Then you have the companies that started out with an apostrophe and subsequently removed it and rebranded:

Barclays
Harrods

I imagine removing the apostrophe was expensive. Registering new trademarks, maintaining old ones, even if no longer used and the marketing costs would be millions.

Picking the original name for a business is a serious business!
