I may be a broken record here, but on the subject of gift giving, the book entitled, The Millionaire Next Door, is the largest study ever done on millionaires; there are 40 or 60 pages, I can't remember which, on giving money to children.
It will answer many questions you may have on how to do it for best results. Incentivizing and providing early experience is key to your child's money success. The opposite results in creating low-functioning, dependent adults. Not a happy outcome for anyone involved.

You all seem pretty level-headed, so this book may only confirm your good sense.
