On the NBC national "news" tonight:

Coverage of the three USians killed in Syria. "News" reporting that, while the US has been sneaking forces in country down, the experts have been warning words to the effect "if the US pulls out, the boogyman will come back". Don't be surprised if the US escalates in Syria, which, by a cheery coincidence, will cover Israel's flank.

Then, the "news" moved on to coverage of Machado's escape and her saying words to the effect "we will free Venezuela, and Cuba, and Nicaragua, and get rid of all the Communists. She sounds just like CIA director Casey, forty years ago, mumbling about "Nicawawa". What I don't know, if if she really thinks this way, and thinks the US will leave Venezuela to the Venezuelans, after tossing Maduro, or if she is a "useful idiot"/paid for front person, reciting a script written by the CIA.

Either way, the Neocons are certainly ascendant.

Israeli official issues stark warning after chilling Syrian military war chants surface

A group of soldiers of the Syrian army was documented chanting a jihadi declaration of war on Israel during a military parade in Damascus on Tuesday, prompting a minister for the Jewish state to issue a chilling prediction.

Amichai Chikli, Israel’s minister of Diaspora Affairs, posted on X, "War is inevitable." Chikli embedded a video from Visegrád 24 that showed Syria’s new army marching through Damascus. Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa attended the military parade.

Israel says it seized the 400-square-kilometer (155-square-mile) demilitarized buffer zone in southern Syria in a preemptive move to prevent militants from moving into the area after Islamist insurgents toppled Assad.

Israeli troops have regularly carried out operations in villages and towns inside and outside the zone, including raids snatching people it says are suspected militants. At least 13 people were killed in an Israeli operation against suspected terrorists last month.

He added, "What we expect Syria to do, of course, is to establish a demilitarized buffer zone from Damascus to the buffer zone area, including the approaches to Mount Hermon and the summit of Mount Hermon.

Saturday's NBC "news" is now on line. The interview with Machado saying she wants to rid Latin America of communism starts at the 14:30 mark.

Far left pieces I find on line about Machado call her "far right" and "fascist". Cuba is of particular interest to Rubio, but I don't recall his nibs directly threatening Cuba, or Nicaragua, the way he has threatened Venezuela, Columbia, Panama, Greenland, and Canada.

Nicaragua's largest export is gold, but only about $1B/year worth. Cuban exports are modest, about $100M each/year of nickle and zinc.

I don't see enough profit to interest Pirate King Trump in invading either Nicaragua or Cuba. Pretty small beans compared to the $13B/year of oil exported from Columbia and the $17.5B/year of oil from Venezuela.

Maybe the Trump regime is playing Machado? Feeding her fantasy of exterminating Communists, so she will be the public face of the USian takeover (and looting) of the country. And, every time she asks when the US is going to knock over Nicaragua and Cuba, she will get excuses and "maybe next year, the year after for sure", but it never happens.
