Mark Hulbert has an article at Asia.com about newsletter results over a 45 year period. Valuline came second with a CAGR of 15%.

In the article he says:

The Ingredients for “Success”

What is this “something else”? After closely studying investment newsletters for 25 years, I have come to the conclusion that it is the patience and discipline to follow a strategy through those (hopefully short-lived) periods in which it is out of synch with the market. Without this patience and discipline, advisers are tempted to second-guess their strategies at the first signs of market-lagging performance. They sell stocks they should be holding and buy stocks that have run up too far and would probably better be sold. In addition, their constant second guessing greatly increases transaction costs.

I personally have struggled with this.

I don’t believe Value Line’s results for the last decade put them in the stellular category. The last AAII article from Mark Hulbert was in Aug 2018 and the table I believe you are referencing is for long term results from 1980 till 2016:

“This small group of newsletters were in publication when Hulbert began tracking performance in 1980 and remained in constant publication as of January 2016 when the Hulbert Financial Digest ceased to be offered by

MarketWatch.”
The Prudent Speculator 14.7 9.20 0.134
NoLoad FundX 12.0 4.51 0.152
The Value Line Investment Survey 11.9 4.32 0.155

Current Hulbert Ratings since inception still have The Prudent Speculator and NoLoad FundX near the top of for their results since inception and at the top of the best 30 year returns but Value Line isn't in the top 25 listed.

More than 20 years ago I had a little money in NoLoadFundX and went to a seminar where Janet Brown talked about using a simple momentum method for investing. At the time I had a complex strategy that was doing better but only worked for a few years. Could have stayed with FundX and done almost as well as I’ve done and saved myself several thousand hours of effort.

RAMC

I did worse than you mentioned. The table is only until 2005. My apologies. The article was written in 2005. I am not sure how such an old article showed up in my feed. I have trouble finding articles from yesterday!

Thanks for the correction

But in all seriousness, you would not have had as much fun. If someone uses all these charts and is on his death bed and someone says, you did slightly worse than the S and P, as long as he had fun, it does not matter.
