The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I am looking for a data source for S&P500 nominal per share Reported Earnings, Sales and Dividends.

For decades, I relied on spglobal.com - Sp EPS est I am assuming tens if not hundreds of thousands of others also used this file.

Unfortunately, as you can see when you open the file, Howard Silverblatt who maintained this file, retired on Jan 31, 2026 after almost 50 years of service! This file is no longer maintained and S&P Global cruelly let this public service die with no recourse for retail investors even if willing to pay a subscription fee.

I did find Professor Shiller's file on shillerdata.com: Shiller Data, if you scroll down a little bit, there is a file called "ie.data (xls)". Column E in this file does seem to provide AS REPORTED GAAP earnings. The data in column E in this file matches the Reported earnings in Silverblatt's file.

I do not how Professor Shiller gets his data. Does he have an institutional subscription with S&P Global, or are there other ways of getting aggregated index data? I see Dividends in column D. Unfortunately, there is no Sales data in his file.

Many sources provide Operating Earnings (FactSet) for example, but getting nominal Reported Earnings per share is hard.

Thanks in advance for any pointers!
