A few days ago, it was suggested that, as the Repubs never wanted the government to do airline security, and especially, security NOT be unionized, the current "crisis" could be leveraged to re-privatize security.
Ron DeSantis floats a new solution to tackle long airport lines: Get rid of the TSA altogether
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has suggested that the United States could get rid of the federal Transportation Security Administration and return to privatized airport security to limit travel delays during government shutdowns.
“Is there evidence that creating TSA has made air travel safer over the past 25 years?” DeSantis asked Saturday on X while toying with the idea. “If not, then why not let the airlines and airports handle it?”https://currently.att.yahoo.com/news/articles/ron-...Steve

How did that work out on 9/11?

Kansas City and a few other airports have gone with private security.
Alas, I don’t know how that has worked out.

Regs are a lot stricter now. No more "box cutters". No more big bottles of liquid. I remember people seeing TSA break the nail file off of their fingernail clippers, because it looked like a stabby thing.
And yet, several security checks have been done, over the years, to see how effective TSA is. Armloads of weapons successfully evaded detection.
I haven't flown commercial since before 9/11, so I don't know what the TSA experience is like. The rent-a-cops I encountered, from the late 70s, through 2000, were generally conscientious. I remember removing my belt to get through the metal detector in Durango, CO, because the rent-a-cop would not let anyone through, if anything triggered the metal detector. One of the other guys in our group commented it was a good thing he wasn't wearing his knee brace that day.
I really don't have a problem with airports going back to rent-a-cops.

Let's turn over security to the lowest bidder or highest briber. They are often the same. What could go wrong?
