One of the "JC" candidates has been proposing repealing the 6% property tax that contributes to education funding.
The GOP controlled State House stole a march on him.
Michigan House OKs $5B property tax cut without replacement revenue
LANSING — The GOP-controlled state House passed its plan to cut property taxes by more than $5 billion late on May 20, but without a promised tax on luxury services to replace lost revenue for schools and local governments.
Hall has promised the cut to property taxes would be revenue neutral, but said May 20 that details on his proposed sales tax on luxury services to replace the lost revenue still need to be worked out with the Treasury Department.
House Bill 5873 would repeal the State Education Tax, which applies six mills to taxable property to support the School Aid Fund. Eliminating the tax would reduce School Aid Fund revenues by $3.2 billion in 2027 and $3.3 billion in 2028, according to a House Fiscal Agency analysis.
House Bill 5874 would repeal the state's 0.75% portion of the Real Estate Transfer Tax, which is applied to the value of a property and paid by the seller when the property is sold. Repealing the tax would reduce School Aid Fund revenues by $475 million in 2027 and by $488.3 million in 2028, according to a House Fiscal Agency analysis https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/michigan-house-o...If it passes the Senate, where Dems hold a 2 seat majority, Gov Whitmer will almost certainly veto it. But a Repub will almost certainly win the Governorship this fall. With the house being on record on defunding education, more, even if it's the other Repub "JC" that wins, and it passes the next Senate, he will certainly sign it. Then watch a GOP legislature send part of that smaller funding pool to private schools, taking even more away from the public schools. Now that the House passed this "tax cut", the tax increase to cover the cost will be quickly forgotten.

Well, happy, happy, joy, joy. The GOP candidate looked like a cinch to win, because the former Dem mayor of Detroit was running as an independent, splitting the Dem vote with the current Dem Sec State, leaving the GOP "JC", with a plurality. Mayor Duggan dropped out yesterday. Common sense seems to have prevailed. Seems likely that Michigan will continue to fund education and road maintenance, at least at current levels, rather than more defunding, to give "JCs" more tax cuts.
....unless the Trump regime declares the vote in Wayne County, which they are now "investigating", void.
