I was reading an article about the anniversary of the Uvalde massacre. The author pointed out that the generations coming up now (pretty much the kids since Sandy Hook) are being minted to be gun control advocates. From Sandy Hook to now, there have been lots of school shootings. By conservatives making guns easier to access, and therefore fueling more shootings, they are creating millions of future gun control advocates. Kids very aware that their peers around the country have been targeted, and they aren't going to want that for their kids.

I don't know if I'll live to see it, but I'm expecting a lot more support for gun legislation in -say- 20 years. Support the politicians won't be able to ignore. Maybe even enough to turn elections. Right now it's an issue, but not one that could turn an election one way or another.

You are correct.

The generation that grew up in a worsening culture, that led to mass gun violence - will be much more open to gun control when they are running the show.

Also, America's population will be less American - and those that make up more of the electorate will give less of a hoot about this.

I keep hoping the Right sees this..... and pre emotively takes action because if they don't, they'll be locked out of the room in a generation on this issue.

Less American?

The beauty of our society is that it is an amalgam of peoples. The only real Americans were the ones that greeted Columbus (or Amerigo Vespucci) when they arrived. Everyone else are immigrants, mostly of European descent.

1poorlady is an American. She was born Filipina, but she is now a citizen, and likely knows more about government than most natural-born Americans (since she had to pass a test, and mostly natural-borns don't).

Less American - as in giving less of a hoot of previous histories, gun culture, etc.

It's not always about race -- RACISTS - think that it is, but it isn't.

As far as the European descent - yeah, they had their witch trials, slave trades, and all the stuff Europeans are known for around the world - I'm not here to carry their blood soaked water.

Less American also means, less aware of rights and liberties - - the how, what, and why. Your one-off example is great, I assure you I can multiply that by 100. But that's not the sample I'm speaking of. 1poorlady isn't gumming up gun control is she? No.

It's easier to take rights when people are less aware or don't care.

Kinda like taking American Civics out of some curriculums and as a way of life - sorta makes it easier to manipulate your democracy - lol right?

Keep it up.

Between Bibi, Vladdy, and Donny....they all had their chance, but I think they are randy again.lol

Not sure I quite follow you. Yes, there is race. But there is also honoring due process and democracy (both, IMHO, cornerstones of American-ness). If you want to lynch someone, that may be historically American, but it isn't the ideal of America. Same with trying to overturn an election (either actively, like voter fraud, or just insisting that fraud existed because your guy lost).

As long as everyone gets to vote**, then the chips fall where they do, you get a peaceful transfer of power, and democracy continues. So did I like Trump winning? No. But he had the EC votes, so he won. Accept it, and hope the nation doesn't die before we get to vote again in four years (which it didn't). To me, that's being a "real" American. You don't always get your way, but you do get a vote.

**A little simplistic, but you probably get where I'm going with this. Dark money, and money in general in politics, are issues.

Umm, no. I'm fairly sure my generation got a Pollyanna view of rights and liberties. I tend to be cynical in my old age and say nothing is inalienable - so I'm more Hobbesian, some think that view is nihilistic. It isn't to me, just practical. I look at the Constitution and see a social contract - and that's where we agreed on rights. But I also see the newer generations as more aware than we were, even as some elements sabotage their education. They have better history available. Our history was sing-song cr@p or so dry your eyelids might weld to your eyeballs.
