Trump cannot afford to come back with a lousy deal, and there’s an objective standard by which that can be measured: the one he tore up in 2018. It’s right there in black and white, pint by point: inspections, enriched uranium giveups, dollars unfrozen, international signatories.
Iran now has a new bunch of leaders at the top (New boss: same as the old boss, but worse). They can hardly let their first interaction with the Great Satan be a complete surrender, especially considering the “surprise attack” they were hit with from both the US and Israel. To do so would severely weaken their standing with their own population, their army, and their adherents in the IRGC.
So both sides need a win, and a big one at that. How do you do that?
The only way I can see it is with complete regime change.
