Huge 53% drop in personal savings rate in 1 year. There is now no doubt inflation is squeezing people's wallets so much that it's forcing household to dip into how much they save. This means less spending down the line- ie less consumer spending later. Negative spiral.

This is stunning.
Personal savings rate April 2025: 5.5% Personal savings rate April 2026: 2.6%
That's a sharp plunge....

The chart I can't copy, but: https://x.com/byHeatherLong/status/205998430434035...

Dope, how will your retirement be affected by inflation? Will you notice a squeeze?

The graphs have been posted before: this 45 year "supply side economic miracle" has been bought by drawing down personal savings, and accumulation of personal and government debt. Anyone can look prosperous, by buying stuff on credit, for a while.

That’s been the Reagan “miracle”.

The graphs have been posted before: Missed it.

Personal savings rate. Downtrend from 1980 to the 2008 recession. A rebound following the recession. Then resuming the downtrend since 2010. Current savings rate varying between 3% and 4%. In the 70s, the savings rate was 10%, and a lot of those people who were saving 10% also had a company paid pension plan and retiree medical, which have since been taken away.

Per capita household income and debt, in constant dollars, 1976 to 2009. Income growth rate pretty consistently outstripped by debt growth.

Folks are frelled, financially.

Folks are frelled, financially.

A thread on the Fool METaR board starts out with a scare headline from Vanguard about the pittance the average person has in a 401k. Of course, averaging all 401k account holders is irrelevant, because the number that matters is how much they have at retirement.

A reply has the number from the Fed: The Federal Reserve estimates that the median net worth for 65-74 year olds is $410,000, while the average is $1.8 million.

Now that is a number that is relevant. It is also inadequate to live on. A big chunk of that is probably tied up in a home, so there is even less to throw off cash income to live on. And most people don't have a company paid pension and retiree medical to buttress it, anymore. People are frelled, before Trump the Conqueror carries out his threat to cut social programs to help pay for his wars.

here's the thread.
