The image I have is of an old school safe cracker wearing a stethoscope, slowly turning the knob,

It's like a wall of safe knobs turning at different rates, some very slowly, some quickly, with some knobs disappearing periodically and new ones forming. And then. viola! A safe door opens into racoon dogs, and then another, and another until finally - jackpot!
