For at least half of Americans, Jim Crow was part of their parents' lives — or their own.

About three weeks after George Washington died in December 1799, another president was born. Millard Fillmore, born the following January, lived until 1874. Then, a few months after he died, Herbert Hoover was born. He lived until 1964 — long enough that he was around for the teenage years of Presidents Donald Trump, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. In fact, Hoover was still alive when Barack Obama was born in 1961.

America, in other words, is only about four presidents old. Over the span of 250 years, there have been 45 different presidents, but their service extended over only about four lifetimes.
