Remember when our republican friends used to pretend to be free market, laissez-faire capitalists?
I'm glad they dropped that ridiculous act!

"Today the Trump administration is announcing a $12 billion welfare-bailout plan for farmers impacted by Trump's tariffs."
"In spite of Trump's claims that tariffs are the greatest, and trade wars are so easy to win, the economic backlash was easy to foresee."

"Trump’s tariffs are not only a new regressive tax for Americans, but a policy of directly picking winners and losers in the economy. The interests of steel workers,
for example, are being placed above the interest of consumers and farmers. This leads to the government using tax payer dollars to prop up farmers.
Of course this spending means that tax-paying consumers are hit yet again, with their tax dollars being used for this new welfare program."

"The result is an economy that increasingly replaces the market with state control."

"I would spend every waking minute of my life raging against these welfare state handouts...if Trump was a Democrat!" ~Marco000 former laissez-faire capitalist

We knew this was coming.

Most farmers vote for Trump so they get special treatment.

In 2024 Trump support grew in America’s top farming counties despite first-term trade war

The American consumer has paid higher prices for food since tariffs were enacted.
Now the American consumer is going to pay $12 Billion to the ag sector because of
these same tariffs.

Looks like the American consumer is really getting screwed on both ends.

This reinforces the fact that Trump bankrupted casinos. In an industry
that is famous for the slogan The House Always Wins, Trump's House(s) went
belly up.

Give Trump enough time, he will push America into default.
The only thing Trump is good at is declaring BK.

As offered, from time to time, on the Fool, in today's Shinyland, bankruptcy is not failure, it's a business plan. We see it the most in the PE model: get the company hip deep in debt, siphon all the money out with consulting fees, management fees, and fees fees. After all the borrowed money has been sucked out of the company, dump it into Chapter 7, and go looking for the next company to strip.

So his nibs is doing the same to Shinyland: ramping up the debt, while lining the pockets of himself and his cronies. Then walk away, while the next bunch has to deal with a country stripped of assets.

By the way, Lord Trump says the tariffs enable the farm bailout.

Trump says his farm bailout 'would not be possible without tariffs.' His critics agree.

Let's dissect: tariffs, like other regressive taxes, take the most from the Proles. So take a bit of the tariff revenue and give it to a favored sub-group of Proles, farmers, while the bulk of the loot is redirected to the "JCs".

For the 12 months ending September 2025, U.S. food inflation has been 2.7% for food at home; 3.7% food away from home; 3.1% total.

This roughly tracks the overall inflation rate, so not sure why you think Trump's to blame here.

Food at home constitutes about 2/3 of the food budget, food away from home about 1/3.

You nailed it Steve!

Here's what happened last time:
"Trump's farm bailout gave the top 1% nearly one-fourth of the aid"
"The top 25 recipients of aid in 2019 received an average of $1.5 million per farm."
"The wealthiest farms should not be getting most of the money, because they have large assets to fall back on in times of trouble.
We're at a time when so many Americans have lost their jobs, are struggling to put food on the table or keep their businesses open,
it makes you wonder why so much money is going to farmers, especially the largest, wealthiest farmers."

Well, it's easy to see why:

Da net:

"2025 Farm Bankruptcies (to date)
The financial distress has intensified in 2025, with a significant surge in filings.

In the first six months of 2025, there were 181 Chapter 12 bankruptcies, a 57% jump compared to the first half of 2024.
Some sources indicate that by mid-2025, the total number of filings had already exceeded the full-year total for 2024.
The rate of filings in the first quarter of 2025 was nearly double that of the first quarter of 2024."

Farmers generally are MAGA. There is no joy in Mudville.

I wonder if Scott Bessent will be able to weather the hardships? /s

He's just another good old boy soybean farmer as he keeps telling us.

The "Bessent soybean farm" refers to the North Dakota farmland owned by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, which he recently divested from to comply with ethics rules as he leads trade discussions involving agricultural tariffs with China, a major soybean market. Bessent had previously identified himself as a soybean farmer and faced scrutiny over potential conflicts of interest, leading to the sale of his large holdings just before a new farm aid package announcement.

Bessent's divestiture occurred just before a planned White House announcement for a $12 billion farm aid package.

Scott Bessent's net worth was reported at at least $521 million as of late 2024, with speculation placing it closer to $600 million.
