brookfield's ~60% owned oaktree became owner of $1B soccer club inter-milan.
given the propesity of rabid billionaire's to overpay (since opportunities are rare for specific teams) for top tier teams, i expect this to become a high IRR transaction soon.
(pre-covid, AC milan was also taken over from a chinese entity and sold)
this is oaktree's second high profile takeover from a defaulting chinese entity; the first was prime HongKong property which has already been monetized. if oaktree can succeed in china's front yard, this must have been a breeze.
given the propensity of china to structure foreign loans in order to seize infrastructure, the response from the former owner was amusing :
"Unfortunately, our efforts to date have been exasperated by legal threats, and a lack of meaningful engagement from Oaktree. Not only has this been deeply frustrating and disappointing, such behavior now poses potential risks to the Club that could seriously jeopardize its stability."
