I did watch that as a teenager. It left a deep impression.
I saw it sometime in the 80s, must have rented it on VHS. The thing I noticed about that trailer was it made Hayes out to be some sort of hero. He not only was so terminally stupid as to try an amateurish attempt at smuggling, iirc, he murdered one of the guards in the prison, before escaping in a stolen guard uniform. The Wiki article on Hayes says he was sentenced to 4 years, in 70, then sentenced to life in 73. The life sentence was commuted to 30 years in 75. As the TV advert, probably produced before much of anyone knew or cared about Hayes said, "when you're busted for drugs over there, you're in for the hassle of your life". Of course, that was 50 years ago. Interesting, isn't it, that some northern European countries have, by USian standards, lax drug laws, yet have a lower rate of drug use than the US, with it's puritanical approach.
