We have not flown anywhere this year. We have some family and friends back east so I finally scheduled a trip using some FF miles on United for earlier this week.
I got a text the night before saying our flight was canceled (bunch of storms back east) and they are putting us on another flight. Originally we were in premium economy, non-stop. This new flight was going to involve a 6 hr layover/connection in Houston and would arrive well after midnight in Dulles. I canceled that and got my money and points back, then had to cancel the hotel and car. I don't think I will be out any money although the hotel could charge us but don't appear to be, at least not so far.
I managed to find some FF seats on a non-stop to DCA (Reagan) on AA. Hopefully that flight has better luck.
I've never had much patience although when I flew more, I did better with shutting down my brain and just assumed things would go wrong. I tend to stress out over things not going according to plan so traveling isn't the best thing for me.
The good part is if something is going to get canceled at least it was when you haven't left home, and aren't stranded in some destination or connecting city.
My wife wants another trip this fall or winter to Europe. I did find 2 business class tickets from the east coast but I might cancel that because it is the day before Thanksgiving and we first would have to find tickets to get to the east coast Thanksgiving week and deal with all of the headaches of holiday travel. Maybe I can find something else in October.
Good luck
