Meta said it would stop using fact checkers and instead rely on Facebook and Instagram users to add notes or corrections to posts. The move is likely to please the Trump administration.

Really hard not to be depressed about the mess our nation is in. Makes me think the grand American experiment in democracy was just a short blip on the timeline of history. It seems humanity is not evolved to deal with the complexity and ambiguity of democracy. The question is just how far down the rabbit hole do they go? I mean they have fully accepted a billionaires assessment that H1Bs are necessary because of their bad cultures. The only good culture is working 70-80 hours a week.

Getting back to the subject.
X's Community Notes feature is brilliant. The summarized reactions in the notes are very accurate and add the needed context. It's a good thing that Facebook will be headed in this direction.

I deleted my FB account 8 years ago because it was a cesspool of misinformation and lies. I heard they introduced fact-checking, but some of the stories 1poorlady sent my way were still rubbish (mostly). She still uses it to keep in touch with family overseas, but if she tells me "I saw on Facebook..." I interrupt and ask "did you verify it?".
Keeping in touch with family is fine. But anyone thinking they are keeping informed with FB is seriously deluding themselves.
And, yes, you can actually DELETE your account. I didn't just close it, I deleted it. I had to google how to do it because they had it buried deep in the menus/settings. They really don't want you doing that.

It may be simply because they can. Sure, this may be them knuckling under to the incoming Administration - but it may also be that they no longer have to knuckle under to the last one.
Content moderation on a social media site is a complicated and annoying task. There's a million different things you have to moderate just to meet your legal obligations, and a million more that you have to filter out just to keep your site usable for normies. There's probably a huge desire not to also have to take on the added burden of monitoring everything and making judgment calls on whether things are true or not.
Other things being equal, I wouldn't be shocked if FB just wants to not have to deal with it and be more like a phone company than a publisher - they just provide the platform for connecting, and aren't involved in making sure that people aren't lying during their phone calls. That's not feasible for FB, but I'm sure that their late-stage capitalist preferences were always more towards not spending resources on fact-checking if they could avoid it.

Cool? Sure, but getting an explicit acknowledgement from the liberal base is not likely. However, we have learned that STEM is more acceptable to snobby elites as long as the students also develop their pottery making skills while studying differential equations and such. Tiger moms disagree.
