Production will not be moved elsewhere; the BrightDrop Zevo line is, for all intents and purposes, dead.

The move comes just two years after GM, with $500 million in Canadian government support, celebrated opening CAMI as Canada’s “first full-scale EV manufacturing plant.”

The company delivered a marginal 146 vans in the US in 2022 and just 497 in all of 2023.

But things were finally picking up this year despite a production pause in April.

Data from 2025 shows the ramp was finally hitting its stride, with sales reportedly jumping to 2,384 units in the third quarter alone—a massive 869% increase year-over-year. The company was on track to sell around 4,000 units this year.

That’s not a massive number, but it was heading in the right direction.

GM, however, sees it differently. As noted by industry observers, GM executives are comparing BrightDrop’s 4,000 sales to the 60,000+ sales of its ancient, gas-guzzling Chevy Express and GMC Savana vans, a platform that dates back to the 1990s.

Will Mary Barra kill other EVs along with Chevy Bolte?

Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC EVs are finally winning buyers, but GM has other plans

The electric Chevy Equinox is America’s best-selling EV outside of Tesla. Cadillac is now leading the luxury segment, but GM said its aggressive EV expansion is over as it shifts back to ICE vehicles.

GM’s electric vehicle sales are growing faster than those of any major OEM in the US. In the third quarter, Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC sold nearly 67,000 EVs, more than doubling from Q3 2024.

Combined, GM accounted for 16.5% of all EV sales in the US in Q3. Although it’s outpacing the industry, GM is pulling back EV plans and will continue to offer several internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles for a bit longer than expected.

GM is “reassessing” EV capacity and manufacturing in the US.

Ev sales will be good without the tax rebates. GM will rethink it again as other show progress. News reports won't get into that. Painting a half false picture makes reporters half.....'ed

Too bad about the BrightDrop electric delivery van getting axed. I imagine that US government decisions like axing EV subsidies and the trade war with Canada had something to do with it.

Likewise, the partial pivot away from the future personal vehicle EV market can definitely in part be linked to the same policies.

I was lucky to be in a position this fall where I was looking to upgrade my 2012 Chevy Volt, I could still take advantage of the $7,500 federal tax credit, and GM and Chevy dealers were offering strong discounts and incentives to move all of their EV inventory prior to the tax credit expiration on Sept. 30th. End result: I flew up to Columbus Ohio on the 29th to buy a lovely new Equinox EV with net discounts/credits bringing my purchase down from the MSRP of $44k to $29,500. It's a fancier model than I'd intended to buy, but the base models were very thin on the ground at that point, and not as heavily discounted. First time I've ever bought a new car, but with the massive discounts and credit, I figure it's kinda like buying one a year or two old, price-wise anyway.

The car has been a joy to drive, and with an adapter I can use the Tesla charging network as well as the CCS charging networks, so cross-country travel is no problem, if a little slower than with a gas car. I don't mind taking a 15 minute break every couple of hours to fill up, good for my health and mental state to take a walk.

We snagged one also, from a local dealer. Same price. Not quite as snappy as the Bolt, but far more comfortable. Cheaper models did not have heated seats. You need those when you turn the heater off due to range anxiety...And like you, we found better deals on the loaded version - an RS for us. Friend got an LT2 for a few hundred less.

Yeah, our other car is a Bolt EV that we practically stole a few years ago: it was one reacquired by GM due to the battery problem, so it was tagged with that on the title, affecting its sales price on the used market as that tag causes worries of it being a lemon, even though every older Bolt had the same problem and had their battery replaced. Bonus for buying it reacquired: full new battery warranty plus a 1 year warranty on the whole car. After the $4500 tax credit I payed $11,500 for a like new Premium Bolt with 27k miles!

I love that car: it drives like a sports car, pretty comfortable (except over rough roads especially at lower speeds), economical, etc ... and I would have gotten another, but I wanted a bigger car for hauling stuff, vacations etc ... Agree 100% on the better comfort, plus the greater range and faster charging make the Equinox EV a reasonable choice for a long trip while the Bolt is better as a regional car.

I was reluctantly willing to buy a base model Equinox EV without heated seats, though I agree that's an important option for EVs. I had my eye on on a base model that I would have only had to put in $22,500 to purchase, and at that price I was going to do it, but those sold out real quick before I could act.
