However painful it is for the hostage families and embattled civilians, this forthcoming pause is bad tactics and a bad deal for Israel.

During the pause, Hamas will certainly regroup and resupply to some degree which will make them a more formidable opponent which fighting resumes. The extra fighting that will be required will extend the duration of the overall operation and will likely take more lives than the the 50 hostages being exchanged.

That aside, making this deal

- validates hostage taking as a viable strategy
- will make the Pro-Hamas propaganda even more intense when Israel resumes the conquest.
- will allow Hamas to first fill its belly on the additional fuel and humanitarian medical and food aide that will flow in during the pause.
- will inevitably cost the IDF some of the momentum it was accumulating
- leaves Hamas with three more batches of 50 hostages with which to gain future pauses to relieve the Israeli pressure on its neck

Israel should just press on with its campaign and accomplish the goal of the operation just as soon as possible. The US and the rest of the world should recognize the necessity to get it over with and give Israel the space and time to do what needs to be done.

I heard reports that the deal includes a provision that will limit Israeli use of drones on future battlefronts once the fighting resumes. Outrageous, this is war for gods sake. It would be insane for Israel to give up any military capability especially a valuable tool such as drone surveillance and offense.

Interesting, I didn't provide a subject but the post was accepted anyway and just defaulted to the first sentence from the body as the subject.

On TMF, I got into the habit of leaving the subject blank until the very end to prevent an inadvertent premature posting. TMF would give an error is you hit submit with no subject. I think that is a better system than what is happening here. Maybe Manlobi can take a look.

But the US and the rest of the world won't do that. The Israelis are well aware that there's a clock ticking on their operation in Gaza. Several clocks, actually. They only have so much "time" (measured in weeks, measured in civilian casualties, measured in protests, measured in damage to the economy from having all the reserves called up) before they'll have to leave.

A four-day cease-fire has many costs (which you described). But it has some benefits. Perhaps most importantly, it will probably put some more time back on some of those clocks.

Support for Israel is cratering. Currently, only 1/3 of Americans believe America should back Israel in its Gaza attack and those Americans who believe America should be "a neutral mediator" has risen to 39%.

According to polling by Reuters/Ipsos released Wednesday, support for Israel among the U.S. public has dropped by nearly 10 percent in the past month. In a Reuters/Ipsos poll taken shortly after the current siege began last month, 41 percent said that the U.S. should back Israel in its attack. Now, in a two-day poll that ended Tuesday, less than a third of respondents, or just 32 percent, said the same. This drop was seen among both Democrats and Republicans.

Further, the poll found that 39 percent of Americans think that the U.S. "should be a neutral mediator," a 12 percent increase in the number who think so since last month.

Images of 31 premature babies at Al-Shifa Hospital in northern Gaza was difficult for most people to watch. And the fact that those babies were transferred out of Gaza to Egypt for treatment didn't make quite the same news splash. (One of the babies did not transfer to Egypt as his parents are currently in northern Gaza; there was some reporting that two babies did not survive the journey.)

Anyway, it's nice to be a Keyboard General but the reality of the situation is not simply a matter of giving "Israel the space and time to do what needs to be done."
