The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

Always cross-check with an expert on any major decision.

Reminded me of Daniel Kahneman, from Thinking, Fast and Slow:

"Another reason for the inferiority of expert judgment is that humans are incorrigibly inconsistent
in making summary judgements of complex information. When asked to evaluate the same information twice,
they frequently give different answers. The extent of the inconsistency if often a matter of real concern.
Experienced radiologists who evaluate chest X-rays as "normal" or "abnormal" contradict themselves 20% of
the time when they see the same picture on separate occasions. A study of 101 independent auditors who were
asked to evaluate the reliability of internal corporate audits revealed a similar degree of inconsistency.
A review of 41 separate studies of auditors, pathologists, psychologists, organizational managers, and other
professionals suggests that this level of inconsistency is typical, even when a case is reevaluated within
a few minutes."

Nobody gets it right every time, not experts and not machines. A second opinion can be wrong too. What helps
is asking what the advice is based on, not just how sure it sounds.

AI is a tool, not a decision-maker. The chatbot didn't send the planes, and ChatGPT didn't try to sign those
players. People did. Whoever acts on the advice owns the result. You showed the right way: you didn't just take
Google's word, you called your doctor and asked why.

People and machines both sound sure when they're wrong, so the job of checking always stays with you.

Glad your doctor gave you the full picture, and glad you're doing well.
