So...1poorkid's friends are going on a trip to Asia very soon. According to her, about 10% of flights are expected to be cancelled (tomorrow!), and more will be delayed. This has created great uncertainty for the travelling friends. Will they make their connections? Will the connections even fly? Hopefully they have travel insurance, because some or all of their arrangements could be cancelled at a whim.
Needless to say, the friends are NOT happy with the Felon or the Reps in Congress (i.e. they correctly identified the source of the problem in that Reps control all three branches of government, and therefore all government functions such as air traffic control).
Travel insurers may be getting a boon. She tells me her friends are looking to pick up a policy ASAP, just in case.

This happens in emerging markets.
America will get used to this.
Among - other things.
Imagine the last....5, 10,15, 25 years ---repeated over and over as time goes on, with gradual decline, with more triblalism, with more economic strife.
Who knows, one day Club 401K somewhere in Asia will be saying "i'm taking my money out of here----emerging markets in America have cheaper labor, and more room to grow"
Which is too bad.
But it's good if it guts the investor class.

It sounds like these friends of 1poorkid's are extremely privileged and possibly in the top 1% of worldwide wealth. Undoubtedly in the top 10% when family wealth is included.
The solution for a scarce resource such as seats on flights to Asia during a shutdown, is: You have to pay a higher ticket price than otherwise to get one of the seats on one of the available flights.
That's fine. The kids are wealthy. If not, how could they afford to go to Asia in the first place?
Rather than complain about having this extreme level of privilege, if you believe prices of airline tickets are too high due to the shutdown, you can petition your government for redress of grievances.
Specifically, contact King Schumer and demand that the Senate Dem Kings pass the clean C.R.

Time constraints. Ships to Asia take more than a week.
As it happens, they are flying to Japan (I think) and hopping on a cruise ship. So a ship is involved, but they have to get to the ship in a reasonable time because of employer vacation limits.

The big carriers are saying that their long-haul international flights are going to go ahead. Hopefully your gang will make it.
My daughter and a friend are supposed to go to Costa Rica tomorrow night, and I think they're on two different carriers. No idea how that's going to work out.

Bzzzt. Incorrect. The friends are roommate whom have to live together in a single house because they can't afford their own places. They are in their 30s, and nowhere near the top 1%. I don't know about their family wealth, so can't comment. I do know they aren't getting help from their families (hence, the roommate thing).

near the top 1%, globally. You only need to earn about $60K to be in the top 1% globally, if you're single:

median American working adult earns enough to be in the top 1%, globally.

Fair enough. Change destination. As some others on this thread have suggested, I have seen reports that international flights will not be impacted. Flying to a hub airport to connect to the international flight might be a problem. As another has suggested, expect seats to be rationed by ability to pay.

If they have enough spare cash to gallivant off to Asia for funsies, they are obviously (if not in the top 1% of wealth globally, the alternative I provided was top 10% including all family resources) WEALTHY on any objective measure.
That's correct, you don't know anything about their family's resources.
People who have the latitude to spend THOUSANDS of dollars on recreational are WEALTHY.
ProGlibs are so CLUELESS.

As a group, no doubt. But I'm pretty sure none of them earn $60K individually. I'm not privy to their details, but I know the sorts of jobs they have. 1poorkid has a similar job to one of them, and she isn't in the $60K category (otherwise I would encourage her to move how and learn how to manage herself...there's only so much you can teach, the rest you have to live it to learn).

Or...they are frugal and save-up for stuff like this. And have roommates, and/or live at home to defray expenses. And 1poorkid is VERY good at finding deals (airfare, etc). Better than I am, and I have more experience. She finds deals for her friends whenever they want to do something.
You remember saving-up? I sure do. I was very frugal in my youth, but I would save up a year (or more) so I could do something 'fun' (or buy something I wanted...I even did lay-away a few times). I know that's a foreign concept to most people today. For me (and, now, for 1poorkid), it's routine.

If said highly privileged scions of ProGlibs don't have express access to family wealth, they quite obviously implicitly have access to it. Or an implicit financial "backstop."
Once again: Anyone who can spend thousands of dollars on an unnecessary trip to Asia with all the other "cool kids" is WEALTHY.

All the little d's need to do is vote for the CR.
But they won't. Why? Because they want to hold the entire country hostage to the whims of their crank, protocommie base.
Time to ratchet up pressure on the 4-5 "moderate" dems.

The shutdown will end when a sufficient number of the approximately 1.4 million federal workers who were either furloughed with no pay, or who are essential and therefore are still working with no pay, decide that resumption of their paychecks is more personally important to them, than is sacrificing their lives, sanity, and financial security for King Schumer and the the other Senate Democrat Kings to have some imagined "political leverage" over the Republicans.
I'm guessing when Santa doesn't come for Christmas there will be a revolt of the federal bureaucracy against King Schumer.

Nope. I know for a fact that at least one of the friends is barely on speaking terms with her parents. She's just smart with money.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, but it is an uninformed one, in this case. I know three of her friends that are going on this trip, and none of what you are claiming applies to them (there are two more whom I don't know).
However, by the standards of most nations, almost all Americans are wealthy. By American standards, these kids really aren't.
