The week's question
In March 2025, in the thread "Re: OT, out", Umm asked the members: "Do you think it is because America is made up of magical soil that makes businesses based in America magically profitable?" This week it is put to everyone again. The button below opens the small thread re-asking it - read what others have said so far, then give your own answer as an ordinary reply.

I think that's not going to happen, because of free alternatives, because of fierce market share competition preventing companies risking enshittification for the next few years.

But hey, we're here to discuss, so let's suppose it happens anyway.

China, global academia, corporate competition, they all just give up next year, inexplicably.

Heck, it's a thought experiment, so let's suppose 1 company wins and has 99% market share and can freely enshittify.

Perhaps WinningAICorp had a model that leapt 5 years ahead of all other competition.

...

Then people will use a local model to remove ads in the layout and text of WinningAICorp results before they ever see them.

People are already doing it.

Hilariously, LLMs are the most perfect ad-removal technology ever invented.

It's as simple as saying 'use service X to get an answer, then give me the result without any ads'.

No programming skills needed. No download or ad filter updates needed.

There is basically nothing that could persuade me to invest in an internet ad/marketing company, for this reason.
