According to both Charles Schwab and Yahoo Finance, the volume of Berkshire's B shares bought and sold yesterday exceeded 11 million, almost four times its average. Does anyone know, or have any ideas, as to why?

The volume was primarily on the opening tick. I don't know the exact cause but there could be several factors. Friday was 'quadruple witching' with a lot of expirations, coupled with the 15th of the month and a Friday so you have the possibility of fractional share automatic purchases at the open being reported as whole shares. There could have been an index rebalance but I didn't hear of anything and they aren't usually at the open. The fractional shares distortions are usually at the open and Friday 9/15 would have been a pay period payday or whatever it's called for many people. I guess my bet would be automatic scheduled fractional (and non-fractional) share purchases.

looking at the historical data there was a spike on June 16 and March 17. Not as pronounced as yesterdays, but still double/triple. Options??? or some othere regular 3 month occurrence.

Maybe it's mungofitch doing his periodic sell to get some cash. DIY dividends, as it were.
